[in no apparent order]
FANTASTIC DOCUMENTARIES
- No Impact Man–An environmentalist writer embarks on a family experiment (with his wife and daughter) to attempt no-waste living for one year.
- Good Hair–Chris Rock explores what it means in the African-American community to have “good hair” and how this will impact the lives of his young daughters. (also see My Nappy Roots, which is similar and more historically grounded)
- Food Inc.–Describes the modern way American food is grown and processed.
- King Corn–Comes to a similar conclusion as Food Inc, but also quite a unique story and context. Two young college graduates spend a year in Iowa, growing an acre of corn.
- Helvetica–A documentary about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture.
- Flow: For the Love of Water-’Flow’ confronts the disturbing reality that our crucial resource is dwindling and greed just may be the cause.
- Bigger, Stronger, Faster– This movie takes on the issue of anabolic steroid use in the United States and is a lot more interesting and touching that one might expect (more than I expected).
- Air Guitar Nation–Who knew that this “sport” was so big internationally? This movie was quite enjoyable.
- Starbucking–A man makes himself a promise to visit all the Starbucks stores and his quest continues. It’s a crazy goal, but the philosophy behind it is pretty thought-provoking.
- Fistful of Quarters: King of Kong
- Word Wars–
- Why We Fight
- Man On Wire
